§ 5072. Definitions

For the purposes of this chapter, the following terms shall have the meanings stated hereinbelow:

(a) Conservation.— Shall mean the protection and limited use of a natural and ecological resource, in order to improve and maintain its natural conditions and characteristics.

(b) Department.— Shall mean the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

(c) Ecologically sustainable development.— Shall mean the development that addresses with the needs of present generations, within the limitations imposed by the environment, without sacrificing the ability of future generations to address their essential needs.

(d) Preservation.— Shall mean the care and protection of a unique or significant natural, cultural, or ecological resource, in order to study and contemplate it in a restricted, limited, and controlled way.

(e) Natural reserve.— Shall mean an area acknowledge and recommended by the Department to be designated by the Planning Board, for the purpose of its preservation, conservation, and management, be it for its physical, ecological and geographical characteristics or for the social value of the natural resources existing therein, in accordance with the objectives and the public policy of the Land Use Plan in effect, as adopted by the Planning Board.

(f) Secretary.— Shall mean the Secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.
