While any Judge may sit in any court, County Courts at Law 1 and 2 primarily hear civil cases. The civil courts set cases on a central docket. Each civil court has a Judicial Executive Assistant (JEA) who is responsible for the administration and operations of his or her respective court. Each civil court also has a Judicial Aide.
Courts 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 will hear primarily criminal cases. Court 4 will hear primarily cases involving offenses against a person whose relationship to or association with the defendant is described by Section 71.0021(b), Section 71.003, or Section 71.005 of the Family Code. Each criminal court has its own judicial aide responsible for setting cases on the individual docket of that court.
In addition, the Criminal Courts Administrator is responsible for the administration of the County Courts at Law that hear criminal cases.
