The origin and destination of animals moved or sold within the state must be identified and recorded by a licensed accredited veterinarian at their first concentration point, as follows:
(1) Animals over two years of age that are returned to farms or ranches, including feeding cattle, shall be identified by an eartag or by a brand. If identified by brand, the animals must be accompanied by a brand release;(2) Animals that are marketed for immediate slaughter shall be identified by eartag or official backtag. An official brand release is acceptable identification for lots of animals of unmixed origin that are shipped directly to slaughter; or(3) Animals without individual identification may be moved directly to and maintained in a feedlot under quarantine under control of the state Animal Industry Board official, provided they are inspected in the feedlot and are moved to slaughter under permit at the end of the feeding period.S.D.
