Every combat jiu jitsu bout begins on the feet. Competitors may not spend more than one (1) minute on their feet in an attempt to bring their opponent to the ground. If, after one minute, neither competitor has been brought to the ground the referee shall stop the bout. Once stopped, the referee shall flip a coin. The winner of the coin flip may decide to take top or bottom position. The starting position shall be butterfly guard with double underhooks. The competitor in the bottom position must start with their chin over the competitor in top positions shoulder.
