Section 13:20-50A.12 - Fuel tank(a) A fuel tank(s) having a minimum 30-gallon capacity shall be provided by the chassis manufacturer. The actual draw capacity of each fuel tank shall be a minimum of 83 percent of the tank capacity. A fuel tank(s) shall be filled and vented to the outside of the body and the fuel filler shall be placed in a location where accidental fuel spillage will not drip or drain onto any part of the exhaust system.(b) No portion of the fuel system that is located to the rear of the engine compartment, except the filler tube, shall extend above the top of the highest portion of the chassis frame rail. Fuel lines shall be mounted to the chassis frame so as to obtain the maximum possible protection from the chassis frame.(c) A fuel filter with a replaceable element shall be installed between the fuel tank and the engine.(d) A school bus constructed with a power lift unit may have the fuel tank mounted on the left chassis frame rail or behind the rear wheels.(e) A Type B, C, and D school bus shall be equipped with a steel guard around the fuel tank, except as otherwise provided for a Type B school bus constructed on a cutaway chassis. A Type B, C, and D school bus shall be deemed to be in compliance with this subsection if the fuel tank on such a school bus is mounted between the chassis frame rails. A Type A school bus shall be equipped with a fuel tank in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.(f) The fuel system shall comply with FMVSS No. 301 ( 49 CFR 571.301) , incorporated herein by reference.N.J.
