Every such treasurer or receiver of school taxes shall be paid such compensation as the board of public education in the district may determine, and, in addition to his salary, be furnished by the school district with the necessary stationery and books required by him in the performance of his duties as treasurer or receiver of school taxes. The board of public education may also appoint, annually, such clerks as it may deem necessary to assist the receiver of taxes.
