Any company organized for supplying water for public and private use may enter upon any land held by any individual or private corporation, whether acquired by purchase, appropriation proceedings, or otherwise, for the purpose of making preliminary examination and surveys, unless such land is owned by and essential to the purposes of another corporation possessing the power of eminent domain, and may appropriate so much of such land, or any interest therein, including any trees, edifices, or buildings thereon, as is deemed necessary for the acquisition, construction, installation, operation, or maintenance of pumps, storage tanks, aqueducts, and water pipes, and for the protection thereof, and other structures and appliances necessary for the maintenance of pressure and the purification of water, and for rights of way over such land and adjacent for the purpose of access to any part of such land. The right of appropriation shall be exercised in the same manner provided by sections 163.01 to 163.22, inclusive, of the Revised Code.
