Section 257.715a - Inspection of certain school buses, buses, or other motor vehicles with seating capacity of 12 or more; delegation of inspection; rules(1) A school bus, bus, or other motor vehicle with a manufacturers rated seating capacity of 12 or more which is owned, leased or used by a nonpublic school, religious organization, nonprofit youth organization, nonprofit rehabilitation facility, or senior citizen center for the transportation of passengers shall not be operated on a highway unless the vehicle has been inspected as provided in this section.(2) The department of state police shall inspect each school bus, bus, or other motor vehicle with a manufacturers rated seating capacity of 12 or more, which is owned, leased or used by a nonpublic school, religious organization, nonprofit youth organization, nonprofit rehabilitation facility, or senior citizen center for the transportation of passengers, annually, and more frequently if defects are found in the organization's vehicles, to determine if the vehicles meet the specifications of the department of state police. The department of state police may delegate the inspection of vehicles under this section to publicly employed inspectors if the inspections comply with this section.(3) The department of state police shall promulgate rules for safety equipment for a school bus, bus, or other motor vehicle regulated under this section pursuant to Act No. 306 of the Public Acts of 1969, as amended, being sections 24.201 to 24.315 of the Michigan Compiled Laws.Add. 1978, Act 547, Imd.
