§ 697. Appropriations and use; free services for indigent persons, payments according to income

(a) To carry out the purposes of this chapter during the fiscal year 1958-59, the sum of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) is hereby appropriated to the Department of Health, which sum may be used for the payment of rent on premises and the purchase of equipment, materials and supplies; payment of salaries; payment on professional service contracts; payment of hospital services; traveling expenses and personnel training; other expenses. Provided, That direct services shall be given free of charge only to indigent persons; other persons availing themselves of the benefits of the program shall pay according to their incomes and resources as determined by the social service, but never in excess of the cost of the services received. Program receipts on this score shall be covered into the general funds of the Government of Puerto Rico.

(b) In succeeding years the funds required for the continuation of this program shall be included in the operating budget of the Department of Health.
