(a) Secretary. — Secretary of Treasury of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
(b) Department. — Department of Health of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
(c) Emergency medical technician. — Person authorized by the Board and who has been trained in the technological phases of medical emergencies, including, without being limited to, communication, emergency medical care of he patient, management and transportation of patients, knowledge of the procedures used in obstetrics and assistance in respiratory and cardiac emergencies.
(d) Emergency medical technician paramedic (EMT-P’s). — Professional authorized by the Board and who has satisfactorily completed a course in emergency medical technology at paramedical level.
(e) Emergency medical technician basic (EMT-B’s). — Professional authorized by the Board and who has satisfactorily completed a basic course in emergency medical technology.
(f) Medical emergency. — A health condition in which unforeseen medical assistance or first aid is needed as soon as possible in order to preserve the health or reduce the damage or disability that may arise as a consequence of an accident or illness.
(g) Control physician. — Physician licensed in Puerto Rico, specialized in emergency medicine or physician licensed in Puerto Rico who has taken and approved courses such as “Advanced Cardiac Life Support” (ACLS), “Advanced Trauma Life Support” (ATLS), and “Pediatric Advanced Life Support” (PALS), and who has at least three years of experience in prehospital care; and who establishes communication with the ambulance personnel, giving them instructions by radio or by any other means of communication, on the management of the patient pursuant to the medical care standards required in the profession for the management of medical emergencies.
(h) Applicant or aspirant. — Any person who applies for the license examination and who graduated from a medical emergency course offered by an educational institution accredited by the General Education Council or the Council on Higher Education.
(i) Revalidation examination. — One of the requirements to obtain the EMT-P’s or EMT-B’s license, which measures the level of cognitive competence, aptitude and skills to practice said profession in Puerto Rico.
(j) License. — Authorization issued by the Board or its authorized representative to authorize the practice of emergency medical technology.
(k) Preparatory courses. —
(1) Emergency medical technician basic course. — Study program based on the emergency medical technician basic curriculum established by the U.S. Department of Transportation and offered by accredited educational institutions.
(2) Emergency medical technician paramedic course. — Study program based on the emergency medical technician paramedic curriculum established by the U.S. Department of Transportation and offered by accredited educational institutions.
(l) Refresher courses. —
(1) Basic. — Course based on the “EMT basic refresher course” curriculum established by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
(2) Advanced. — Course based on the “EMT paramedic refresher course” curriculum established by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
