§ 1704. Definitions

The following terms shall have the meanings hereinbelow expressed wherever used or mentioned in this chapter, except where the context clearly indicates otherwise:

(a) Corporation. — Shall mean the Puerto Rico Rural Development Corporation created by this chapter.

(b) Secretary. — Shall mean the Secretary of Agriculture.

(c) Agriculture. — Shall mean the cultivation and farming of the land and the engaging in animal husbandry in all its branches, including apiculture and aviculture as well as freshwater and sea fishing.

(d) Family farming. — Shall mean an agricultural activity in which the labor is provided to a considerable extent by the owner and his family.

(e) Agricultural product. — Any product of Puerto Rico obtained from farming and the cattle industries in all their branches, whether or not under the cooperative model, including apiculture, aviculture, and hydroponics and all products derived from any of the said activities, whether fresh or in any form of processing or preservation. This term shall include also the products of freshwater and sea fishing or of hydroponics.

(f) Rural Zone or Rurality. — Shall mean the areas outside the urban zone of the city or larger towns and including the small towns, especially those in hilly regions.

(g) The words used in the singular shall include the plural and vice versa, and the words referring to persons shall include firms, natural or juridical persons, public and private, and any group of persons, enterprises or partnerships.
