Section 410 ILCS 30/1

In each building, including commercial, residential and institutional structures, served during regular business hours by an unsupervised automatic passenger elevator for use by the general public, the elevator, or at least the left elevator where there is more than one elevator in any bank of elevators, shall be equipped with elevator controls, within the elevator and at each floor level served by the elevator, which have tactile identification or braille markings, pursuant to the following schedule:

(a) New elevators for which building permits are issued after the effective date of this Act or October 1, 1977, whichever date is later - immediately;
(b) Existing elevators undergoing renovation of the control panel for which building permits are issued after the effective date of this Act or October 1, 1977, whichever date is later - immediately;
(c) Existing elevators not undergoing renovation, the earlier of:
(1) 90 days after the effective date of Federal standards governing elevator control markings applicable to privately owned buildings, or
(2) June 30, 1980.

All tactile identification except braille shall be in contrasting colors and consist of raised letters, numbers, labels or plaques for persons with a visual disability .
