Pursuant to 42 CFR 482.55 the rehabilitation hospital may opt not to have an Emergency Department. If it opts not to have an Emergency Department, signage designating such shall be posted in a prominent location to ensure the public does not perceive that the hospital has an emergency room. The hospital shall have the ability to provide basic life saving measures to patient's, staff, and visitors and have written policies for appraisals of emergencies, initial treatment, and referral when appropriate.
