Section 141-58-52 - WVNG Rifle and Pistol Teams

The State Marksmanship Coordinator (SMC) will select the staff and members of the WVNG Rifle and Pistol Teams from the ranks of outstanding shooters in the WV National Guard.

a.Team Composition. The SMC is authorized to select and train a rifle team of not more than 18 members, and a pistol team of not more than 12 members to represent the WVNG in competitive matches.
b.Team Selection. Thirty (30) days prior to the Annual State Small Arms Matches, rifle and pistol team captains will drop 1/3 of authorized shooters, causing equipment to be cleaned, inventoried, and turned-dn. Decisions for elimination will be based upon, but not limited to the following considerations:
1). Participation in scheduled practice sessions and matches.
2). Scores in practice and competition with emphasis on progress achieved.
3). Attitude and cooperation with other team members.
4). Status as "Old" or "New" shooter.
c.Vacancies. Vacancies on each team will be filled and equipment issued NLT thirty (30) days following the State Small Arms Matches. Individual selections will be based on judgement of Team Captains and Marksmanship Coordinator after reviewing results of small arms competition and will include consideration of the following:
1). Scores
2). Availability for practice sessions (one per quarter) and matches.
3). Attitude and interest
4). Apparent ability/skill and response to coaching
5). Status as "Old" or "New" Shooter
a). This procedure will have the effect of causing the lower third of old shooters from each team to compete for retention each year and allow infusion of new talent into the shooting program. Match grade pistol equipment will be made available at State Matches for persons desiring to compete for available spaces.
b). New shooters are required to comply with the intent of the

*Marksmanship Training Program and participate to the fullest extent possible.

c). Personnel selected for the rifle and pistol teams normally participate in an additional duty status. Members are authorized to perform split assemblies (one week-end / 4 periods) per quarter to participate in scheduled matches or assist units of the WVNG to improve their shooting program.
d).Assistance to Unit Teams. In order to assist and promote a higher degree of proficiency at the unit level, members of the State Teams will be made available as coaches on request of unit commanders. Request should be forwarded thru channels to the Adjutant General, ATTN: DC SPORT.
d.Shooting Uniform. The SMC may designate an appropriate distinctive shooting uniform for members of the State Teams. Uniform is to be worn only when participating in shooting events.
