SUMMARY OF CONTENT SPECIALIZATION PROGRAM AREAS
The content specialization program objectives for school nurses are clustered into eight major headings: theory, program management, nursing process, interdisciplinary collaboration, health education, professional development, community health systems, and research.

School Nurse Content Specialization Objectives
The purpose of this policy is to establish program objectives that West Virginia institutions of higher education would use to develop training programs for "school nurses. The objectives are to be used by the institutions for developing their programs. All of the objectives for school nurses _are viewed as job-related by all three programmatic levels, i.e./ early childhood (grades K-4), middle childhood (grades 5-8), and adolescent education (grades 9-12).

Teacher Education Training Program Objectives for School Nurses, Grades K-12, Proposed Policy 5119.02
1.0THEORY
Following completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
1.1 Understand theories of nursing and other appropriate theories to make decisions on nursing practice. Theories shall Include but not be limited to growth and development, hierarchy of needs, systems, family and group dynamics, learning, change, crisis, self-care, public health science including epidemiology and levels of prevention/weIIness, and adaptation.
1.2 Utilize theory and critical thinking to formulate generalizations.
1.3 Communicate theoretical information to peers, students, family, other professionals, and the community.
2.0 PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
Following completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
2.1 Understand need to collaborate with school administrators to establish, review, and revise policy and procedures for a comprehensive school health services program as defined in State Board policies and other state guidelines, rules, regulations/ and legal constraints.
2.2 Understand legal aspects of health services provided within the school setting.
2.3 Understand methods of promoting awareness of school health programs to the community.
2.4 Understand the processes to identify students at-risk for physical and psychosocial problems. -
2.5 Understand processes to communicate health needs to school personnel.
2.6 Understand methods of reporting and recording data to provide for continuity and accountability of the program.
2.7 Understand the use of data management systems in planning and evaluating comprehensive school health programs.
3.0 NURSING PROCESS
Following completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
3.1 Collect, record, and interpret subjective and objective data from: student, family, significant others, school personnel, and health care professionals.
3.2 Formulate nursing diagnoses based on comprehensive assessments.
3.3 Develop a nursing care plan In collaboration with the student, family, health care providers, and school personnel.
3.4 Select intervention strategies for individuals and populations at risk to prevent potential health problems.
3.5 Select intervention strategies for a. normal well child who evidences an acute illness, injury, or temporary handicapping condition.
3.6 Select methods for teaching the student positive health practices for self-care.
3.7 Select interventions to enhance self-care ability for the student with health problems.
3.8 Communicate to the student and family the current health status and identify resources for meeting health needs.
3.9 Employ teaching learning principles to enable the student to make appropriate health decisions.
3.9 Communicate to school personnel the adaptations necessary to meet individual student's health needs.
3.11 Utilize principles of health counseling and referral.
3.12 Implement the nursing care plans to ensure optimal educational opportunity for handicapped, chronically ill, and terminally ill students.
3.13. Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care.
3.14 Document the effectiveness of the plan of care.
3.15 Revise the nursing care plan as needed.
4.0 INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION
Following "completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
4.1 Participate as a team member in the formulation of overall goals, plans, and decisions.
4.2 Understand the advocacy role in relation to the student and family.
4.3 Participate with supportive disciplines in the development of the individualized educational plan when service for the student is health related.
4.4 Understand the significance of the roles of each supportive discipline.
5.0 HEALTH EDUCATION
Following completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
5.1 Identify health education needs of students.
5.2 Utilize principles of learning and appropriate teaching methods.
5.3 Provide information and assess understanding of the basic principles of health to individuals and groups.
5.4 Act as resource person in health education/health promotion to school personnel.
6.0 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Following completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
6.1 Assume the responsibility for continued professional development.
6.2 Analyze recommendations resulting from evaluation processes and develop strategies for change when appropriate.
6.3 Demonstrate professional responsibility through organizational membership and active support and/or participation in appropriate professional activities.
7.0 COMMUNITY HEALTH SYSTEMS
Following completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
7.1 Utilize theoretical base to understand the structure and function of a community.
7.2 Understand methods for conducting community health assessments.
7.3 Identify deficits in school health services and facilitate the development of needed services.
7.4 Recognize current legal, social, and political issues that influence the nature of school and community health.
7.5 Understand the roles of individuals and groups, including legislative bodies and regional and state planning groups, as they relate to school and community health needs.
7.6 Collaborate with agencies and organizations within and outside of the community to insure provision and continuity of service and care.
8.0 RESEARCH
Following completion of the program the prospective school nurse will be able to:
8.1 Utilize research base in practice.
8.2 Identify problems regarding school nursing practice.
