Section 296-307-230 - General requirements for materials handling and storage(1) Safe clearances of three feet must be allowed for aisles, loading docks, doorways, and wherever turns or passage must be made. Passageways must be kept clear and in good repair, with no obstructions.(2) Bags, bales, boxes, and other containers stored in tiers must be made secure against sliding or collapse.(3) Storage areas must be kept free from any accumulation of materials that could cause tripping, fire, or explosion.(4) Employees must be instructed in proper lifting or moving techniques and methods. Mechanical devices or assistance in lifting must be used when moving heavy objects.(5) When removing material stored in piles, employees must remove material in a manner that maintains the stability of the pile and prevents collapse.(6) Storage areas must have proper drainage.(7) The employer must provide clearance signs to warn of clearance limits.(8) For powered industrial truck (forklift) requirements, see WAC 296-307-520.Wash.
