Section 70:03:01:56 - Extended period overlength semitrailer permits - Limitations

An extended period overlength semitrailer permit may be issued for the movement on state trunk highways of a semitrailer over 53 feet long provided the following conditions are met:

(1) The semitrailer length may not exceed 60 feet;

(2) The overall length of the tractor and semitrailer may not exceed 80 feet;

(3) The distance from the center of the semitrailer's rear axle to its rear may not exceed 30 percent of its length;

(4) The maximum offtracking distance calculated according to the formula contained in § 70:03:01:55, may not exceed 17 feet when using a foot turning radius, TR, of 75 feet;

(5) All overlength trailers permitted under this rule must meet the conspicuity requirements set forth under Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations part 393.13;

(6) Rear underride protection must be provided on the semitrailer if the bottom of the rear of the semitrailer is more than 20 inches above the ground and the rear tires of the semitrailer are set more than 2 feet ahead of the rear of the semitrailer. Semitrailers must meet the rear underride protection requirements set forth under Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, part 393.86;

(7) The trailer was manufactured prior to September 1, 1998.

The extended period permit is the permit for the movement of the overlength semitrailer and must be carried in the cab of the truck tractor.
