All facilities where either patients' beds or a critical service, such as operating, delivery, diagnostic, recreation, patient dining, dietary, laundry, central storage, or therapy rooms, is located, other than the first floor, shall have an electrical or electrohydraulic elevator. Each elevator car and platform shall be constructed of noncombustible material, except that material treated with fire retardant may be used if each exterior surface of the car is covered with metal. A hospital-type elevator shall have inside dimensions that will accommodate a patient's bed and attendants and shall be at least five feet (1.52 meters) wide by seven feet six inches (2.29 meters) deep. The car door shall have a clear opening of not less than three feet eight inches (1.12 meters). Each elevator shall have automatic two-way leveling with accuracy within plus or minus one half inch (0.01 meters). Elevators, except freight elevators, shall be equipped with a two-way special service switch to permit each car to bypass all landing button calls and to be dispatched directly to any floor.
