Section 20:04:25:00 - Types of races

The following types of horse races are authorized in South Dakota:

(1) "Allowance race," a race in which contestants receive weight allowance based on performance or winnings or both, as stipulated in the conditions of the race;
(2) "Claiming race," a race in which any animal entered may be claimed in conformity with the rules;
(3) "Free handicap," a handicap in which no liability for entrance money is incurred;
(4) "Handicap," a race in which weights are to be carried by the entered animals and are adjusted by a handicapper for the purpose of equalizing their respective chances of winning;
(5) "Highweight handicap," a handicap in which the weight assigned to the top horse in the handicap is not less than 140 pounds;
(6) "Invitational handicap," a handicap for which the racing secretary or handicapper has selected the contestants assigned the weights;
(7) "Match," a private sweepstakes between two animals which are the property of two different owners;
(8) "Overnight race," a race for which entries close 96 hours or less before the time set for the first race of the day on which the race is to be run;
(9) "Owner's handicap," a race in which the owner fixes, at the time of entry, the weight the owner's animal is to carry;
(10) "Post race," a race in which the subscribers announce at declaration the animal or animals each intends to start, without limitations of choice other than as prescribed by the rules and conditions of the race;
(11) "Private sweepstakes," a stakes race in which the participating nominators have engaged their respective entries and which, previous to closing, has not been advertised for entries in any manner;
(12) "Produce race," a race in which the produce of animals named or described at the time of entry are contestants;
(13) "Purse race," a race for money or other prizes to which the owners do not contribute entrance money;
(14) "Stakes race or sweepstakes," a race to which nominators of the engaged entries contribute to a purse or to which money, or any other award, may be added, but no overnight race, regardless of its conditions, is a stakes race;
(15) "Special weights," a race in which weight for age or sex, or both, is set by the conditions of the race, usually pertaining to maiden race;
(16) "Walkover," a race in which two horses of entirely different interests do not run for stakes. If at the time of saddling, only one horse has weighed out, that horse shall be ridden past the judges' stand, go to the post, and then move over the course. That horse is the winner;
(17) "Weight for age," a race in which a standard weight is assigned to horses according to their age.
