The terms used in this chapter have the same meaning as in North Dakota Century Code chapter 43-35, except that:
1. "Annular-space: annulus" means the space between a casing and a riser or between the riser and the borehole.2. "Aquifer" means a water-bearing formation that transmits water in sufficient quantities to supply a well for a beneficial use.3. "Borehole" means an open or cased subsurface hole created by drilling.4. "Casing" means the pipe installed to maintain the integrity of the borehole. The term casing is used in this chapter only in reference to protective casing; the definition is included to distinguish the term from riser.5. "Department" means the department of environmental quality.6. "Monitoring well" means any cased excavation or opening into the ground made by digging, boring, drilling, driving, jetting, or other methods for the purpose of determining the physical, chemical, biological, or radiological properties of ground water.7. "Riser" means the pipe extending from the well screen to or above the ground surface.8. "Shall" or "must" means mandatory compliance with all aspects of the specific provision of this chapter within which the word appears.9. "Should" means the specific provision in which the word appears is not mandatory but is a recommended desirable procedure or method.
