Section 505.1 - Signals

The following audible signals to be sounded by public warning devices are hereby established as the official civil defense signals throughout the State of New York:

(a) Attack warning signal shall be:
(1) A three- to five-minute wailing tone on sirens or a series of short blasts on horns or other devises, repeated as deemed necessary.
(2) The attack warning signal shall mean that an actual attack against this country has been detected and that protective action should be taken.
(3) The attack warning signal shall be sounded on all public warning devices immediately upon receipt of the attack warning message, which will be worded as follows "THIS IS AN ATTACK WARNING, REPEAT, THIS IS AN ATTACK WARNING, TIME (________) HOURS (date)".

Note: Undoubtedly this information will be made available throughout the United States in ZULU time. Retransmission from New York State will follow immediately with a translation to local time.

(4) The attack warning signal shall be used for no other purpose and shall have no other meaning.
(b) Attention or alert signal shall be:
(1) A three- to five-minute steady tone on sirens or other public warning devices to get public attention in times of emergency.
(2) The signal shall be known as the attention or the alert signal (either or both) and shall be sounded strictly at the option and on the authority of local government officials, and will be activated under such circumstances (including in the event of natural disaster) as local government officials may determine.
(3) In addition to any other meaning or requirement for action as determined by local government officials, it shall mean to all persons, "LISTEN FOR ESSENTIAL EMERGENCY INFORMATION."
