Section 13:20-50B.24 - Metal treatment(a) All metal used in the construction of a school bus body, including items such as structural members, inside and outside panels, door panels, and floor sills, shall be zinc-coated or aluminum-coated or treated by an equivalent process before the school bus is constructed. This subsection shall not apply to items such as door handles, grab handles, interior decorative parts, and other interior plated parts.(b) All metal parts that will be painted shall be chemically cleaned, etched, zinc phosphate-coated and zinc chromate or epoxy-primed, or the metal may be conditioned by an equivalent process.(c) In complying with the requirements of this section, particular attention shall be given to lapped surfaces, welded connections of structural members, cut edges on punched or drilled hole areas in sheet metal, closed or boxed sections, unvented or undrained areas, and surfaces subject to abrasion during vehicle operation.(d) As evidence that the requirements of this section have been met, samples of materials and sections used in the construction of the school bus body shall not lose more than 10 percent of material by weight when subjected to a 1,000-hour salt spray test in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials B117-73, "Standard Method of Salt Spray (Fog) Testing," incorporated herein by reference, as amended and supplemented, copies of which may be obtained from the American Society for Testing and Materials, 100 Barr Harbor Drive, West Conshohocken, PA 19428, (610) 832-9585.
