Section Saf-C 1308.23 - Rubrails(a) For the purposes of this section, "rubrail" means a piece of steel plate that is ribbed and wrapped around the body of the school bus to provide strength and lessen any impact upon collision.(b) There shall be one rubrail located approximately at seat level, which shall extend from the rear side of the entrance door completely around the body, except at the emergency door or rear compartment to a point of curvature near the outside cowl on the left side.(c) There shall be one rubrail located approximately at the floor line, which shall cover the same longitudinal area as the upper rubrail, except at the wheel-housing, which shall extend at the radius of the right and left rear corners.(d) There shall be one rubrail located at the lower skirt line, which does not have to extend around the corners of the school bus.(e) Each rubrail shall be attached to each body post and all other upright structural members.(f) Each rubrail shall be 4 inches or more in width in its finished form, and shall be of 16 gauge steel or the equivalent and shall be constructed in a corrugated or ribbed fashion.(g) Each rubrail shall be applied outside the body or body posts. Pressed in or snap-on rubrails shall not be permitted.(h) Rubrails shall not be required to extend around the rear corners in the event the school bus is:(1) A type A school bus using a chassis manufacturer's body; or(2) A type B, C or D school bus using a rear luggage or rear engine compartment.N.H.
