Section He-P 4035.67 - Training for Ophthalmic Use of Strontium-90(a) Except as provided in He-P 4035.71, the licensee shall require the authorized user of strontium-90 for ophthalmic radiotherapy to be a physician who: (1) Is an authorized user under He-P 4035.69, or the equivalent requirements of an agreement state or the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; or(2) Has completed 24 hours of instruction applicable to the medical use of strontium-90 for ophthalmic radiotherapy, and a period of supervised clinical training in ophthalmic radiotherapy, as follows:a. To satisfy the requirement for instruction, the classroom and laboratory training shall include: 1. Radiation physics and instrumentation;3. Mathematics pertaining to the use and measurement of radioactivity; and4. Radiation biology; andb. To satisfy the requirement for a period of supervised clinical training in ophthalmic radiotherapy, training shall be under the supervision of an authorized user at a medical institution, clinic, or private practice and shall include the use of strontium-90 for the ophthalmic treatment of 5 individuals that includes: 1. Examination of each individual to be treated;2. Calculation of the dose to be administered;3. Administration of the dose; and4. Follow-up and review of each individual's case history.(b) In accordance with He-P 4035.67(a) above, an authorized user who is a physician shall: (1) Obtain a written attestation, signed by a preceptor authorized user who meets the requirements in He-P 4035.67, He-P 4035.69, He-P 4035.71, or the equivalent requirements of an agreement state, or the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, that the individual has satisfactorily completed the requirements in He-P 4035.67(a)(2); and(2) Is able to independently fulfill the radiation safety-related duties as an authorized user of strontium-90 for ophthalmic use.N.H.
