A trauma service is an organized structure of care for the patient. The must be established and recognized by the medical staff. The service includes personnel and resources necessary to ensure the appropriate efficient care delivery. The composition of the service will vary depending on the nature of the medical center, available resources and personnel and patient clinical need. The trauma service must come under the organization and direction of a surgeon who is board certified with special interest in trauma care. All patients with multiple system trauma or major injury must be evaluated by the trauma service. Injured patients may be admitted to individual surgeons.
