The 121st Legislature amended the Sensible Transportation Policy Act by enacting PL 2002, Ch. 22, "An Act to Enhance Integration of Transportation and Land Use Planning." The amendment requires MaineDOT to develop a rule that would establish a linkage between the comprehensive planning considerations of the Community Planning and Land Use Regulation Act ( 30-A MRSA, section187, subchapter 2) and the transportation planning and decision-making processes required under the Sensible Transportation Policy Act. The 123rd Legislature enacted Title 23 § 73-A which promotes coordinated land use and transportation decisions and offers funding preferences to those communities that enact plans, policies, ordinances, etc. that preserve transportation functionalities.
