The licensure of genetic counselors is established to ensure that practitioners are qualified to provide to Iowans genetic counseling with reasonable skill and safety. The provisions of Iowa Code chapters 147, 148H, and 272 C authorize the board of medicine to establish eligibility requirements for licensure, evaluate the credentials of applicants for licensure, issue licenses to qualified applicants, institute continuing education requirements, investigate complaints and reports alleging that licensed genetic counselors have violated statutes and rules governing the practice of genetic counseling, make available participation in the Iowa physician health program, and discipline licensed genetic counselors found guilty of infractions as provided in state law and board rules.
