Section 8-50-3 - Disposition of lost and found items(a) All schools and department of education offices are to make every reasonable effort to return all money or property found in school premises to the rightful owner in accordance with the law. A record shall be kept of all such money and property and a report of same made to the chief of police of the county.(b) Parents are to be notified through the Parent-Teacher Association, school bulletin, or by other appropriate means each year, of money and property found on school premises. Parents shall be informed that prompt action should be taken to recover lost items and be advised that appropriate disposition shall be made of any unclaimed money and property.(c) All money or property found on school premises and reported or delivered by the finder to the school office or other office shall be returned to its rightful owner upon establishment of ownership. If no right of ownership is established, the money or property shall be returned to the person who found it after forty-five days following the report to the chief of police of the county where the item was found.(d) The school shall maintain a list of all property found and turned in to the school office or other office. The list shall include the date, a description of the item found, and the name of the finder. A copy of the list shall be transmitted to the chief of police of the county where the item was found. Schools shall transmit the list during winter recess, spring recess, or immediately following the close of school. A record of the disposition of the item shall be documented by the school forty-five days following the report to the chief of police of the county where the item was found.[Eff.
