Section 13-60.11-1 - PurposeThe purposes for this chapter regarding the Kipahulu Community-Based Subsistence Fishing Area are to:
(1) Sustainably support the subsistence needs of the Kipahulu Moku community on the island of Maui through culturally-rooted, community based management;(2) Ensure the sustainability of nearshore ocean resources in the area through effective management practices, including the establishment of limits on the harvest of marine life;(3) Recognize and protect customary and traditional native Hawaiian fishing practices that are exercised for subsistence, cultural, and religious purposes in the area;(4) Facilitate the substantive involvement of the community in resource management decisions for the area through dialogue with community residents and resource users;(5) Establish the 'Opihi Rest Area to ensure stock health and to allow replenishment of this important food resource; and(6) Establish the Kukui Bay Sanctuary for the preservation and protection of critical nursery habitat for numerous marine species, including species traditionally relied upon for subsistence.Haw.
