Rule 17-2818 - AUTHORIZATION TO PRACTICE VETERINARY MEDICINE WITHOUT A LICENSE
2818.1

The following persons may be issued a temporary authorization to practice veterinary medicine without a license:

(a) A student enrolled in an accredited veterinary medical program who engages in the practice of veterinary medicine under supervision and in accordance with D.C. Official Code § 3-1201.03(c);
(b) An applicant who has filed an initial application and is awaiting action on that initial application in accordance with D.C. Official Code § 3-1201.03(e);
(c) A person seeking to complete four hundred (400) hours of mentorship and supervision to qualify for licensure in accordance with § 2804.3; or
(d) A person seeking to complete four hundred (400) hours of mentorship and supervision to qualify for reactivation or reinstatement of a license in accordance with § 2811.3(b) or 2812.5(b).
2818.2

An authorization to practice veterinary medicine pursuant to this section shall not exceed ninety (90) days.

2818.3

A person may be authorized to practice under this section only under supervision of a licensed veterinarian in good standing.

2818.4

Practice of veterinary medicine permitted in accordance with § 2818.1(c) or (d) may not begin until the Board has issued the authorization for such practice based on its review of the proposed practice and the scope of the intended supervision, as well as mentorship if applicable.

2818.5

Practice authorized under this section shall cease immediately upon the termination of the supervision or mentorship by either the supervisor or the supervisee.

2818.6

The veterinarian supervising person(s) in accordance with § 2818.1(c) or (d) shall inform the Board immediately when the supervision or mentorship authorized under this section is terminated.

2818.7

A person authorized to practice under this section shall not in any way represent himself or herself or allow himself or herself to be represented to the public or patients as a licensed veterinarian.
