Current through Register Vol. 71, No. 49, December 6, 2024
Rule 10-A1504 - HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS
1504.1

The 2000 Census reported that 54 percent of the homes in the Capitol Hill Planning Area were row houses. This is more than double the citywide average of 26 percent. Only 4.2 percent of the housing units were single family detached homes, compared to 13 percent for the city as a whole. The area also contained fewer units in large apartment buildings than the city as a whole. Only nine percent of Capitol Hill's housing units were in buildings with more than 20 units, compared to 30 percent citywide. Conversely, Capitol Hill has more units in 2-4 unit buildings than the city as a whole-more than 20 percent in 2000 (compared to a citywide average of 11 percent). 1504.1

1504.2

The 2000 Census reported that 10.8 percent of the housing units in the Planning Area were vacant. This is a reduction from the 1990 rate of 11.9 percent. The 2000 vacancy rate is comparable to the citywide rate of 9.6 percent. 1504.2

1504.3

About half of all Capitol Hill households are homeowners and half are renters. The percentage of owners rose from 48.2 percent in 1990 to 50.3 percent in 2000, while the percentage of renters fell from 51.8 percent to 49.7 percent. Capitol Hill has a higher home ownership rate than the city as a whole. 1504.3
