Section 9C.08 - Bicycle BoxSupport:
(DE Revision) A bicycle box (see Figure 9C-10) on the approach to a signalized intersection can provide one or more of the following benefits: A. Increase the visibility of stopped bicyclists at an intersection during the red signal indication, B. Provide a head start for stopped bicyclists at an intersection upon the green signal indication, C. Reduce conflicts between bicyclists and turning traffic at an intersection at the onset of the green signal indication, D. Group bicyclists together to clear an intersection quickly, minimizing impediments to other traffic at the onset of the green indication. Guidance:
(DE Revision) At intersections with high numbers of conflicts between turning motorists and bicyclists during the green interval of a signal, consideration should be given to treatments instead of or in addition to the bicycle box. Option:
(DE Revision) These treatments may include, but are not limited to, the following: A. Separating conflicting traffic with leading or exclusive signal phases B. Separating turning traffic from through traffic by providing exclusive turn lanes Standard:
(DE Revision) When used, a bicycle box shall be formed by an advance stop line placed at least 10 feet in advance of the intersection stop line. 05 (DE Revision) At least one bicycle symbol shall be placed within a bicycle box (see Figures 9C-10 and 9C-11). 06 (DE Revision) A NO TURN ON RED (R10-11 series) sign shall be installed wherever a bicycle box is placed in a lane from which turns on red would otherwise be permitted. 07 (DE Revision) Where a bicycle box is provided across multiple lanes of an approach, countdown pedestrian signals (see Section 4E.07) shall be provided for the crosswalk across the approach on which the bicycle box is located. Support:
(DE Revision) Countdown pedestrian signals can inform bicyclists whether there is adequate time remaining to cross to an adjacent lane before the onset of the green signal phase for that approach. Guidance:
(DE Revision) A STOP HERE ON RED (R10-6 or R10-6a) sign should be provided at the advance stop line defining the bicycle box with an EXCEPT BICYCLES (R3-7bP) word legend plaque below (see Figure 9C-11). 10 (DE Revision) A bicycle lane of at least 50 feet in length should be provided on the approach to a bicycle box. Support:
