Section 64533.5 - Maximum Residual Disinfectant Levels(a) Using the monitoring and calculation methods specified in sections 64534, 64534.4, 64535, and 64535.4, the MRDLs for the disinfectants shown in table 64533.5-A shall not be exceeded in drinking water supplied to the public. (b) Notwithstanding subsection (a), systems may increase residual disinfectant levels of chlorine or chloramines (but not chlorine dioxide) in the distribution system in excess of the levels specified in table 64533.5-A in order to protect public health, to address specific microbiological contamination problems caused by circumstances such as, but not limited to, distribution line breaks, storm run-off events, source water contamination events, natural disasters, or cross-connection events. In such circumstances, systems shall immediately notify the State Board of the source and cause of contamination, the levels of residual disinfectant, other actions being taken to correct the problem, and the expected duration of the exceedance.(c) The best technologies, treatment techniques, or other means available for achieving compliance with the maximum residual disinfectant levels in this section are control of treatment processes to reduce disinfectant demand and control of disinfection treatment processes to reduce disinfectant levels.Cal.
