Description: Insurance carriers and self-insured coal mine operators are required to maintain cancelled checks for five years in order to verify payment of black lung benefits. Verification may become necessary since benefit payments made by an operator or carriers are paid directly to the person entitled to benefits or to a representative payee, if authorized.
